Human Generations in Shadowrun

Shadowrun spans over 70 years of in-world lore. How might its generations break down from a human perspective and what would define each cohort's worldview? A speculative dive into how humans of the Sixth World might continue to break down generations in comparison to how generations are broken down in the real world.

When I started my research for the Shadowrun books I wrote, there was a lot of discussion in the media about generational breakdowns and changes. How changing technology has affected those generations. For example, only 15% of American households had internet access in the late 1980s, 51% by 2000, and 95% by 2020. In the 80s and 90s, social media did not exist and mobile phones were garbage compared to 2026.

Given Shadowrun's 70+ years of lore history from Awakening to the 2080s, I began to wonder how generations might break down in the Sixth World. Modern social generations span roughly 15-year segments (Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, etc.). I kept this timescale for future Shadowrun generations to keep the math consistent.

The birth years for the real-world generations (Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z) are taken from Wikipedia. The Early Awakened generation replaces the current real-world Generation Alpha. However, the exact birth years of Gen Alpha and Gen Beta are not yet fully determined in our modern world.

NOTE: This article treats generations from a human-lifespan perspective. Humans are still the majority metahuman in the Sixth World. Also, I have a follow-up articles discussing how other metahumans might view generations given their differing lifespans.

Post-Awakening Generations

The following covers the big events that people born into and reaching adolescence during would experience.

1. Early Awakened Generation

Birth Years: 2012 – 2027 (15 years)
Age by 2050: 23 – 38
Age by 2080: 53 – 68

Defining Events:

  • 2011: UGE (Unexplained Genetic Expression) begins; first documented metahuman births of elves and dwarfs.
  • 2014: Eruption of Redondo Peak and destruction of Los Alamos by Daniel Howling Coyote.
  • 2017: The Ghost Dance War. Daniel Howling Coyote and the Sovereign American Indian Movement wield awakened magic to devastating effect, culminating in the Great Ghost Dance and forced eruptions of Mts. Hood, Rainier, St. Helens, and Adams.
  • 2018: Treaty of Denver signed under duress; the United States cedes vast western territories.
  • 2021: Goblinization. Roughly one in ten humans undergoes violent physical transformation into orks or trolls.
  • 2022: VITAS II pandemic.

Why Early Awakened? These children grow up during the immediate aftermath of magic's return. They experience a world where orks, trolls, elves, dwarves, and dragons are emerging into daily life. They also grow up while North America is being actively redrawn: the United States their parents knew is losing territory to sovereign Indigenous nations that reclaimed their lands through the use of magic.

NOTE: The majority of Shadowrunner characters seen in the first and second edition of the game would be born during this generation.

2. Crash Generation

Birth Years: 2028 - 2043 (15 years)
Age by 2050: 7 - 22
Age by 2080: 37 - 52

Defining Events:

  • 2029: The Crash Virus shatters the global Internet, erasing records, identities, and corporate infrastructure worldwide. Leading to the birth of the Matrix as a replacement.
  • 2030s: The Native American Nations consolidate their gains as a bloc of independent countries: Sioux Nation, Salish-Shidhe Council, Pueblo Corporate Council, Ute Nation, Athabaskan Council, Algonkian-Manitou Council, and Tsimshian Nation.
  • 2034: Founding of the Corporate Court; extraterritoriality formalizes megacorporate sovereignty.

Why Crash Generation? Those born during these years come of age amid the aftershocks of the Crash-related mass identity loss, corporate power grabs, and the reconfiguration of North America into a patchwork of successor states: USA and Canada merging into UCAS, the CAS secession, Mexico becoming Aztlan, the NAN, Tír Tairngire, Quebec, and the California Free State. Their worldview is shaped by unstable politics, the corporatization of nearly every aspect of life, and the new reality that the borders on the map are younger than themselves.

3. Shadow Generation

Birth Years: 2044 - 2059 (15 years)
Age by 2050: 0 - 6
Age by 2080: 21 - 36

Defining Events:

  • 2050: The "classic" Shadowrun era begins (1st Edition release), with Shadowrunners becoming a recognized subculture or occupation.
  • 2055: Bug City (Chicago insect spirit crisis) and the exposure of Universal Brotherhood as a front for Insect Spirits.
  • 2057: Great Dragon Dunkelzahn elected UCAS President and subsequently assassinated.
  • 2059: Renraku Arcology Shutdown. Threat of first rogue AI called Deus.

Why Shadow Generation? Megacorporations are firmly and openly in control. Most governments are corporate proxies. Shadowrunners are common while awakened threats grow more prominent across the planet. By the time they reach adulthood (late 2050s), "running the shadows" is part of everyday news, romanticized and feared.

4. Comet Generation

Birth Years: 2060 - 2075 (15 years)
Age by 2080: 5 - 20

Defining Events:

  • 2061: Year of the Comet. Massive mana spikes, SURGE (Sudden Unexplained Recessive Genetic Expression).
  • 2064: Matrix Crash ("Crash 2.0"). Introduction of the truly Wireless Matrix.
  • 2071: Emergence of technomancers, AI, and further worldwide upheavals.

Why Comet Generation? Born during magical turbulence and revolutionary Matrix changes, this cohort's childhood is marked by phenomena like SURGE and the brand-new Wireless Matrix. By the late 2070s, they are teenagers or young adults exploring an entirely restructured digital world.

5. Wireless Generation

Birth Years: 2076 - 2091 (15 years)
Age by 2080: 0 - 4

Defining Events:

  • Post-Crash 2.0: The Wireless Matrix is fully established; no one under 20 even remembers life with wired Matrix technology.
  • 2083: The Unawakening the conclusion of the Disian Shadow War and a 10-day disappearance of magic from the world.

Why Wireless Generation? These newborns will grow up in a world where metahumans, magic, cybernetics, and virtual worlds are commonplace. Even their parents, possibly their grandparents, don't remember a time when magic, elves, and dragons were things of fantasy rather than daily reality.

Using Generations in Shadowrun

Character Backstories

Older NPCs (Crash or Shadow Generation) might have vivid memories of early corporate crackdowns, post-Crash chaos, or Bug City. Younger NPCs (Comet or Wireless Generation) may see magical and technological diversity as completely normal and be less inclined toward the biases of earlier eras.

Societal Attitudes

  • Early Awakened & Crash Gens: More likely to carry the prejudices against metahumans and the Awakened from those early transition periods. Anxieties of population displacement, plagues, wars, and realignment of the entire world order. Older members may even remember the pre-Awakening United States as a coherent country, which is itself a minority experience by 2080.
  • Shadow & Comet Gens: Grew up with metahumans everywhere, but also under near-constant corporate or magical crisis cautious and street-savvy.
  • Wireless Gen: May take the convergence of magic, technology, and diverse metahumanity entirely for granted, pushing society further toward acceptance.

Cultural References

Different generations will have distinct cultural hallmarks music, simsense idols, trideo shows, famous corporate or magical scandals shaping how they relate to the world and each other.

Think of it like kids who grew up watching the original Star Trek on TV, versus kids whose entry point was Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, versus kids whose first Star Trek was Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks. Same franchise, entirely different entry points and different assumptions about what's "normal."

Coming Next: Metahuman Perspectives

The framework above works for humans, but it starts to strain the moment it is applied to other metatypes. I have plans for my next blog article to explore this idea.
